How do vaccines work?
Vaccines work by sparking an immune response to a certain infection without actually ever infecting you. By doing this, your body creates antibodies and when you come in contact with that specific virus or bacteria in the future, it remembers it and is able to effectively attack it.
Vaccines provide long-lasting protection against many illnesses that could cause harm or death.
How long does it take to produce a vaccine?
Many people may be surprised at the length of time it takes to produce and evaluate a new therapy. It can take upwards of 12 years to fully evaluate the safety and effectiveness of a potential new treatment. This is due to the multiple phases of clinical trials that are used to ensure that 1) a medication works and 2) it’s safe for the general public.
When it comes to vaccines however, the process is able to be nudged along a bit faster. For example, the typical seasonal flu vaccine can be produced, evaluated and distributed in less than a year. This is because manufacturers are essentially using the same process every year but inserting new genetic codes based on which viruses are expected to circulate that year.
The Coronavirus vaccine is expected to take between 12 to 18 months. The process can be rushed in the cases of pandemics, but experts warn that pushing the process too quickly can be dangerous.
